By running Oxford House on a democratic basis, members of Oxford House become able to accept the authority of the group because the group is a peer group. Each member has an equal voice in the group and each has an opportunity to relearn responsibility and to accept decisions once they are made. While research on AA has been limited by the role of anonymity in recovery, the willingness of the Oxford Houses to open their doors to academic research gives us an opportunity to see recovery from addiction in action. On March 30, 2023 Summerlin South members gathered to elect their respective Class A delegates and alternate delegates. At the April 20, 2023 Summerlin South Board of Directors meeting, the Board recognized those homeowners who expressed interest in serving their community.
They immediately decided to change the rule that limited a stay to six months because they had witnessed that when a person was required to leave because the time was up they almost always relapsed within thirty days of leaving. That was an important change because recovering individuals take different lengths of time to become comfortable enough in sobriety to avoid relapse. There is no reason to believe that society as a whole had the responsibility to provide long-term housing within a protected environment for the alcoholic and drug addict. However, there is every reason to believe that recovering alcoholics and drug addicts can do for themselves that which society as a whole has no responsibility to do for them. Oxford House is built on the premise of expanding in order to meet the needs of recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.

The Oxford House policy is a critical component of the system because it aids in the safe and secure environment in which patients can recover. Individuals who struggle with addiction are provided with the tools and support needed to become self-sufficient and stay clean, and Oxford House is a powerful and effective tool for this process. One of the greatest threats to the sobriety of a recovering alcoholic or drug addict is loneliness. Be honest and straight-forward when sharing the Oxford House concept with others. The reason that each Oxford House is independent arises from the very practical consideration that those who are closest to a situation are best able to manage it.
